Spooner Industries set to install their 375th Air Turn in 30 years
Spooner Industries Ltd has recently won an order to supply an Air Turn for installation at a speciality paper manufacturer in Belgium. Idempapers, one of the leading producers of carbonless and technical speciality papers for the printing and converting industry, has rebuilt PM#4 to incorporate a Spooner Air Turn enabling the contactless production of various types of coated paper. This project will mark the 375th Air Turn that Spooner has supplied to their customers around the world. The 550 mm radius, stainless steel unit, is installed after the existing film press and replaces a bow roll and steam cylinder to facilitate non-contact turning of the paper to prevent picking of the coating. Production has started this month (January 2012) Since the invention of the Air Turn by the specialist engineers at Spooner, the original design has been continually refined to improve its operation and enable Spooner to remain at the forefront of non-contact air flotation technology. As a result of this continuous development, the Air Turn is fully automatic with no operator involvement, any changes in the paper operating tension are accommodated within the units' closed loop control system resulting in total contact free operation with an stable paper sheet without edge vibration which can cause paper breaks. In a number of instances the Air Turn has also proven to be extremely effective at smoothing out any wrinkles and flutes which have formed in the web after the size press and enabling a flat sheet to be presented to the bow roll and after drying cylinders, thus avoiding creases being created. For 80 years Spooner has worked in partnership with many of the world’s leading manufacturers, providing unique technology solutions for a vast range of process problems. Offering unrivalled worldwide experience in the drying, curing, cooling and non-contact handling of coated and impregnated web materials, whether the substrate be paper, film, foil, heavy metal strip or textiles. Spooner’s Ilkley HQ also boasts a Pilot Facility with in-house testing equipment available for a wide variety of processes. The comprehensive range of pilot equipment is available to all customers and most applications.
