In a nutshell, ‘The Cloud’ eradicates traditional reliance on your computer’s hard drive and instead utilises your internet connection, enabling access to software and services, wherever you are. Cloud computing is used in many different environments however, using it for business purposes is entirely different from using the cloud for personal needs. The most obvious being being, businesses have different options to choose from for cloud implementation: Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), Software-as-a-Service (Saas) or with Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS). What does this mean? In simple terms, businesses using PaaS can customise their own applications to suit their needs whereas companies using SaaS must choose an application to subscribe to (a host manages the application itself). On the other side of the coin, Google and Amazon’s services fall under the IaaS category; here, businesses wishing to use this type of cloud service are charged ‘rent’. The cloud services industry has been experiencing high growth rates and was rapidly increasing even before the start of the pandemic and the subsequent surge in remote working. But what is driving organsations to move data to the cloud? 1: On-demand availability, easily accessed through a broad network 2: Shared resources without security risks 3: Competitive edge 4: Flexibility 5: Disaster recovery 6: Time and money-saving 7: Easy data monitoring 8: Mobile accessibility 9: Access to automatic updates 10: Reliability It’s no wonder then, that an increasing amount of companies are opting for a transition to The Cloud - and the consequences of COVID-19 has blown the clouds of business services over a lot quicker than was anticipated. Infact, the market share of the cloud services industry is expected to reach $138.3 billion US dollars by 2022! This is of course due to the unprecedented increase in remote working, forcing us all to restructure not only the way they work, but how our business infrastructures function. The mass adoption of Microsoft Teams and Zoom, the switch to cloud telephony and cloud CRMs has called for increased integrated services. Now, the challenge for IT/telephony suppliers is to deliver all the systems we need in a remote business setting, as well as in the office.
