A vent port stuffer is a compact, gearbox-driven unit that bolts onto the vent opening of a plastics extruder. Inside it sits a pair of small intermeshing screws. Their job is simple. Push any molten material that tries to climb out of the vent straight back down into the barrel, while still letting air, moisture and volatile gases escape.
Vent ports exist because plastic melt carries things you do not want in the finished product. Trapped air, water from the raw material and volatile compounds all need pulling out, usually under vacuum. The problem is that the melt does not always behave. Under pressure, or when the barrel is running full, it rises up the port and out. That means lost material, blocked vents and an unhappy production manager.
Screwtech Engineering supplies vent port stuffers built to stop that happening. The self-wiping twin-screw design keeps the screws clean as they turn, so the unit does not clog itself up. A precision build means full vacuum can be drawn, so moisture and volatiles come out and the polymer stays in.
Each unit is made from high quality stainless steel, with an easy clean two-part vacuum chamber and a separate seal housing. An oil filled gearbox with a water cooled jacket keeps it running at high temperature for the long haul.
Screwtech offers vent port stuffers in various sizes to suit a wide range of twin-screw and single-screw extruders. If you are losing material out of the vent, or want to push more through the line without hurting quality, get in touch with Screwtech Engineering to talk through your machine.
