What does self-wiping twin screw mean on a vent stuffer?

Self-wiping describes a pair of intermeshing screws whose flights are shaped so that, as they rotate, each screw scrapes the surface of the other. Material cannot sit on the flights for long, because the other screw is constantly clearing it off.

On a vent port stuffer, that makes all the difference. The stuffer is there to push rising melt back into the barrel. If the screws doing that job collected material themselves, it would cool, degrade and eventually block the vent. Exactly the problem you were trying to solve.

Screwtech Engineering vent port stuffers use a self-wiping twin-screw design that helps prevent material rising up the vent port. The screws convey melt downwards and keep themselves clean as they go.

That gives you a vent that stays open over long runs. Precision tolerances between the screws and housing mean full vacuum can be drawn, removing moisture and volatiles, without the melt following the gas out.

The result is less downtime from vent port blockage, better degassing and the ability to run at higher fill levels while maintaining product quality.

Screwtech stuffers are built from high quality stainless steel, with an easy clean two-part vacuum chamber, separate seal housing and an oil filled gearbox with water cooled jacket. Various sizes suit twin-screw and single-screw extruders. Get in touch with Screwtech Engineering.
