Do vent port stuffers work on single screw extruders?

Yes. Vent port stuffers are most often talked about on twin screw compounding lines, but vented single screw extruders suffer the same vent problems and benefit from the same fix.

A vented single screw extruder uses a two-stage screw. The first stage melts and pressurises the material, then the screw decompresses at the vent so gas can escape, and the second stage builds pressure again for the die. If the balance between those stages is off, or output is pushed up, melt comes up the vent.

Screwtech Engineering supplies vent port stuffers in various sizes to suit a wide range of twin-screw and single-screw extruders. On a single screw line, the stuffer does the same job. Its self-wiping twin screws push rising melt back into the barrel while air, moisture and volatiles carry on out.

Precision tolerances mean you can keep full vacuum on the vent. The screw design becomes less critical, which takes some of the pressure off getting that two-stage balance exactly right.

Each unit is built from high quality stainless steel for demanding production environments, with an easy clean two-part vacuum chamber, a separate seal housing and an oil filled gearbox with water cooled jacket for long life at high temperature.

If your single screw line is flooding at the vent or holding back on output, get in touch with Screwtech Engineering to find the right size stuffer for your machine.
