Can a vent port stuffer make screw configuration less critical?

On a twin screw extruder, the screw configuration under a vent has to do something quite specific. It needs to decompress the melt so gas can escape, without leaving melt so free that it climbs up the vent. Get it slightly wrong and you either degas poorly or flood the port.

That makes the vent zone one of the most sensitive parts of the configuration. Change material, change throughput or change fill level, and what worked last month may not work now.

A vent port stuffer takes a lot of that pressure off. Screwtech Engineering stuffers use a self-wiping twin-screw design to push any rising melt back into the barrel. Because the stuffer is handling containment, the screw configuration becomes less critical.

That gives you more flexibility. You can run different materials and throughputs with fewer configuration changes, and focus your screw design on mixing and conveying rather than babysitting the vent.

Screwtech also manufactures screw elements from top quality corrosion and wear resistant steels, with nitriding, stainless steels and other alloys available for specific requirements. So if your configuration does need work, they can help there too.

Stuffers are built in high quality stainless steel, with full vacuum capability, an easy clean two-part vacuum chamber and an oil filled, water cooled gearbox. Various sizes suit twin-screw and single-screw extruders. Talk to Screwtech Engineering.
