It is one of the most overlooked problems in our industry, with the massive boost to install EV chargers and even home/office/shop electrical installations so many of them are being done without proper design in the headlong race to make money at any cost, leaving behind it a minefield of potentially dangerous installations which are just an accident waiting to happen, unfortunately, it only seems to come to light when an accident happens by which time it is far too late. People just assume you can spend 5-6 hours of your time for nothing just to do an Electrical Design Survey for an EV installation, they think it should be free, but people minds sets are very squad, as they don’t see the value in it; It should be for nothing they cry, but if you ask them to give up 5-6 hours of their time out of their working day for nothing i.e. no pay, they will be the 1st to object very vehemently, go figure! Electrical design is one of the most important things you can do for any type of electrical system, but nobody wants to pay for it, most major systems are designed, and it can take months of hard work and cost, in the selection of systems to make sure everything is right and works safely together. In most small systems it is overlooked and if a contractor is asked 9 times out of 10, they have no design calcs to prove the system they are installing is safe to install., always down to money, not safety, a very dangerous route. Regulation 132 of BS 7671 clearly states that design must be carried out to prove a system is safe, however as the LAW stands people will always say this is JUST a BS CODE, is not law and they are right, they constantly abuse this position because the system is not geared to protect the public, and the public doesn’t care about safety if it’s going to cost them money, however, they are prosecuted BY HSE for not complying with EAWR 1989 which is a legal requirement, which clearly states that one way to meet the legal requirements for the installation of an electrical system is to comply with BS 7671 as the minimum standard they should be working to which means it must be designed 1st.
