Pryor Personalises Memento For 25th Anniversary MERI With Laser Engraving Technology
On the 10th September 2015, the Materials and Engineering Research Institute (MERI) at Sheffield Hallam University celebrated its 25th anniversary with a gala dinner. Students at the university designed a memento for the event; a single object to convey everything that the department has done over the past quarter of a century. The winning design was a cog with four functions; a napkin holder, a place marker, a conversation piece and a coaster. Each cog is bespoke, individualised by laser engraving each guest’s name onto their keepsake. Local industrial partners manufactured the cogs for MERI; with Pryor providing the laser engraving that personalised the memento and established the occasion, recording the milestone achievement. Professor Alan Smith, (CEng, CSci, FIMMM, Ph.D) Director of the Materials and Engineering Research Institute, explained; ”Part of the rationale for the design and manufacture of the MERI memento was to demonstrate out excellent, symbiotic relationship with our industry partners. Pryor Marking, for example, didn’t hesitate when I approached them and asked if they would laser etch individually each of the 140 bespoke MERI napkin holders. They even accommodated last minute design changes and still managed to finish the etching on time.” Pryor works very closely with Sheffield Hallam University and has employed many of the university’s graduates. The cog, with its simple design and multi functionality, symbolises the value of relationships and partnerships within the local community.
