Mature Oak Trees Successfully Relocated to Support Sustainable Development in Norfolk

Two mature Oak trees have been successfully relocated at Beeston Park, Norfolk, demonstrating how specialist arboricultural expertise can support development projects while preserving valuable landscape and ecological assets.

The tree translocation project was undertaken to facilitate the construction of a new site entrance, allowing development works to progress without the need to remove the established trees. By opting for relocation rather than removal, the project team was able to retain the significant environmental, aesthetic and biodiversity benefits provided by the mature Oaks.

Plantscape carried out the complex operation using specialist tree transplanting equipment and techniques. Prior to relocation, both trees underwent a programme of preparatory works, including crown reduction, crown thinning and the removal of deadwood, helping to improve resilience and maximise the likelihood of successful establishment in their new locations.

The transplanting process utilised one of the largest tree spades available in the UK, supplied through one of Plantscape's specialist delivery partners. The machine is capable of relocating trees with stem diameters of up to 450mm and rootballs measuring approximately 2.5 metres in diameter. Each tree was carefully excavated, lifted and transported before being replanted and secured using aerial guying systems and drive-in ground anchors to ensure stability during the establishment period.

To support the trees following transplantation, seasoned hardwood woodchip mulch was applied around the root zones and a structured watering programme implemented to minimise transplant shock. Ongoing aftercare and monitoring will continue over the coming months to promote healthy establishment and long-term growth.

Alongside large-scale tree translocation projects, Plantscape also operates a smaller tree spade capable of relocating trees with rootballs of up to 0.9 metres in diameter, enabling a broad range of tree-moving projects across both commercial and domestic settings.

As sustainability and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) continue to shape development projects across the UK, tree translocation is increasingly being recognised as a practical alternative to tree removal. The approach enables developers and landowners to retain mature landscape features, preserve canopy cover and support biodiversity objectives, while still delivering essential infrastructure and development requirements.

The successful relocation at Beeston Park highlights how innovative arboricultural solutions can help strike a balance between responsible development and environmental stewardship.
