Living with Plastic
Living With Plastic – Ocean saturation? Many people were horrified when the plight of our oceans was highlighted in the BBC programme Blue Planet II. The worse culprits seem to be plastic bags, bottles, straws and cups. One example given to help us visualise this is a dustbin lorry dumping a full load of plastic into the sea every minute, of every day, 365 days of the year. Add to that the microplastic granules found in the fish that we are eating, plastic saturation is a very serious problem. Useful as plastic is what is being done to combat this issue? How do we at Perfect Choice treat the old PVC windows we remove? What is being done with them? Living with Plastic – Recycling When Perfect Choice starts a new job the old windows are removed and taken back to the unit. Here everything is sorted into that which can be: Recycled. Left out for the public to use Rubbish. The recycling is made up of solid plastic which our suppliers return to the manufacturers. They in turn ‘melt’ it down to be made into sills and trims. Eurocell is one of our manufacturers and has one of the most advanced recycling facilities, operating a closed loop system. This means the cycle of removal, collection, recycling, re-manufacturing and re-fitting. Interestingly they have been short-listed for the National Recycling Awards in the Manufacturer of the Year category. Winner announced 28th June 2018. At our offices we leave out any windows and doors that may be useful to the local residents so they can be re-used Living with Plastic – Our Part Very little of the Oceans plastic is uPVC and with the momentum up and running to develop even better ways to manage plastic it should stay that way. However the story of our seas is just that, our story, our problem. Every rogue plastic bag blowing in the wind, every carelessly discarded plastic cup or straw for pooh sticks is our responsibility. There is a need for all of us to get serious from big business to the smallest family. The image above is an installation created to make us aware, the company behind this is Corona of lemonade fame. Here are some great ways that we personally can be a force for change!
