PD Models Case Study: Presentation Award

■ PD Models were approached to create an award to be presented to the president of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers. We had only a short specification to work from. The design work was our free rein. The main concept had to be based around an efficient fly wheel that would run for ten minuets after being brought up to speed by hand. ■ PD Models achieved this specification by machining a solid brass fly wheel which was covered in a carbon fibre vinyl to represent the material that the client works with. A gear box was designed and installed with a custom hand crank, that would drive a set of one way bearings attached to the flywheel. It was a success, when wound the flywheel would indeed spin on for over the ten minutes required. ■ All of this was constructed into a laser etched, acrylic case which encased all the working’s for both aesthetics and safety. ■ This job was a great example of PD Models “can do” attitude, we were given not much more than an idea and told to go away and make it happen. PD Models experience and ability to design in the end won out and the client was extremely pleased with the result.
