The visible surface gets most of the attention in a landscaping project, but the layer underneath is often what determines whether the finished area stays level and stable. A sub-base spreads loads, improves stability and helps prevent paving, gravel or other finishes from moving into soft ground.

Driveways, patios, paths and areas carrying regular traffic will normally benefit from a properly compacted sub-base.
