Preparing Gravel Garden Paths for Winter

Gravel paths often cope well with winter, but repeated rain, frost and foot traffic can expose weaknesses in the surface. Autumn is a good time to deal with low spots, blocked drainage and loose edges before colder weather makes them worse.

Begin by raking gravel back to an even depth and filling any areas where the underlying base has become exposed.

If the route becomes icy, use an appropriate de-icing method for the surrounding materials and planting.
