We Want to Prove It! Prove It!

ITV approached Magnet Sales when it was looking for a company to supply a magnet for suspending a man over a swamp in the new children’s programme Prove It! MSS has supplied an assembly comprising a high performance rare earth holding magnet: The magnet is a Neodymium Iron Boron block, 50mm x 50mm x 25.4mm (LxWxD). Although powerful, this magnet alone would not have been strong enough to hold the weight of a man. This level of holding force was achieved by magnetic engineering. The magnet is sandwiched between two steel endplates (as in the picture above). One of the end plates becomes saturated with the south pole of the magnetic flux, the other with the north pole. The flux then "jumps" across the air gap in between the end-plates when the magnet comes into contact with another magnetic surface. This enables the north and south pole to work in conjunction with each other, thus increasing the holding force to the required level. The magnet proved more than capable, and thankfully the man did not fall into the swamp!
