Case Study - Broomfield Hospital

Broomfield Hospital Private Finance Initiative scheme, for Mid-Essex NHS Hospital Services Trust, will provide a 43 000m2 new build acute hospital including more than 330 beds, A&E and maternity departments, plus neonatal intensive care unit. The project will create a single acute hospital site in Mid Essex providing first class facilities for the local population. Our part in this project was to install 3 new diesel generators into a basement level, purpose built hall; the generators will provide essential back up power for vital hospital services. Careful planning was required to execute this difficult lift and shift operation. A 120 Tonne capacity crane was selected for the task and carefully positioned close to an overhead helipad and within the working radius of a tower crane. The generators and their ancillary components were carefully lowered into the basement and transferred over a 250 mm x 250 mm step into the generating hall. We had to complete this phase of the project in just one day, (5 artic loads) so that disruption to the construction project as a whole was kept to an absolute minimum.
