Passivhaus Rooflights Bring Daylight and Smoke Ventilation to Monifieth Learning Campus

New project photography has been released from Monifieth Learning Campus in Scotland, showcasing how a carefully designed package of Passivhaus rooflights is helping bring natural daylight deep into the building while supporting its demanding energy-performance requirements.

The new-build campus was constructed to replace the ageing Monifieth High School and has been designed to provide an energy-efficient learning environment for approximately 1,200 pupils, alongside early learning, vocational, sports and community facilities.

LAMILUX was appointed to design, supply and install a tailored package of rooflight solutions across the campus, combining LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60 Passivhaus systems, Glass Skylight FE Passivhaus rooflights and Smoke Lift Glass Skylight FE Passivhaus units.

Bringing Natural Daylight into the Heart of the Campus

Natural daylight formed an important part of the building design. The rooflights were positioned above areas including the central atrium, classrooms, sports hall, communal breakout spaces and library, helping introduce daylight into areas that could not be effectively reached through façade glazing alone.

Seven LAMILUX Glass Roof PR60 Passivhaus mono-pitch rooflights were installed, together with seven Glass Skylight FE Passivhaus rooflights. Four of the Glass Skylight FE units are fixed, while three incorporate concealed chain drives to provide controlled natural ventilation.

The Glass Roof PR60 systems feature triple thermal-insulation glazing, while the Glass Skylight FE Passivhaus units use clear quadruple-layer safety glazing. Both were selected to help maintain the thermal and airtightness performance required by the Passivhaus design.

Integrating Smoke Ventilation

Four Smoke Lift Glass Skylight FE Passivhaus units were also incorporated into the building's smoke ventilation strategy. Each unit combines natural daylight and high thermal performance with effective smoke extraction, allowing this important safety requirement to be integrated without compromising the performance of the highly insulated building envelope.

The smoke vents open to 165 degrees and form part of a coordinated approach that combines daylight, natural ventilation, smoke control and energy efficiency within the same rooflight package.

In total, LAMILUX designed, supplied and installed 18 Passivhaus-certified glass roof and rooflight systems at Monifieth Learning Campus.

The completed project demonstrates how different rooflight systems can be combined to meet the varied requirements of a modern educational building, creating bright and comfortable interior spaces while supporting the campus's energy-efficiency, ventilation and safety objectives.
