How Impact's Zigzag Classification Unit has been helping waste producers in the run up to the new regulations... Some welcome the introduction of LOI tests (those that meet the low tax rate), whereas others have reservations, understandably concerned about the possible increase in landfill tax bills made possible by HMRC. The quality of materials that end in landfill have to be improved by waste producers, with a huge hike in costs which could mean that their annual tax bill significantly increase. Waste samples that are tested to contain over 15% (reducing to 10% after the 12 month interim) LOI will qualify for the higher tax rate of £82.60 per tonne. This figure could hugely affect waste producers processing 10 tonnes of waste a day 360 days a year, for example, resulting in a landfill tax bill nearing £1m. Impact Air Systems Zigzag Classification Unit (ZCU) has been specifically designed to assist waste producers in removing the inert materials from their trommel fines or waste stream, and therefore eligible for the lower tax rate of just £2.60 per tonne, which is used for landfill cover. Numerous systems have been installed already, with many waste producers anticipating the increase in costs. Since the system was commissioned at Robert Hopkins Environmental it has benefited from an improved RDF output stream. Neil Fryer, Operations Manager commented “We are extremely satisfied with the results from Impact’s Zigzag Classification Unit (ZCU). Having previously tried other technologies the Impact ZCU system exceeded our expectations, we can now supply our WTE plant with a consistent product”. How it works... Mixed material fed into the system via a belt conveyor is processed by the zigzag system, splitting the material based on density, size and shape into a stream of heavy and light materials. Heavy material is discharged from the base of the zigzag classi­cation chamber, whilst the lighter material and fi­ne dust particles are transported in the airstream and discharged at the base of the rotary material separator and from the fully integrated reverse jet cartridge style dust fi­lter unit.
