Getting PPE Right Starts With a List
The number of workplace incidents that occur because the right PPE simply was not available, or was available but wrong for the task, is higher than most people realise. A clear, practical checklist is one of the most straightforward ways to close that gap. Here is a working framework for three of the most common environments Helman Group supplies.
Construction Sites
Construction workers face a broad mix of hazards. Your PPE checklist should cover: disposable coveralls for paint, chemical, and asbestos work (Tyvek is the standard choice here); high-visibility vests and jackets for all outdoor and traffic-adjacent work; hard hats, safety boots, and gloves. Where hazardous substances are being handled, step up to Proshield or Tychem as the task demands.
Manufacturing Environments
Manufacturing risks vary enormously by industry, but a general checklist should include: disposable chemical coveralls appropriate to the substances handled; eye and face protection; hand protection; hearing protection for noisy areas; high-visibility garments where plant vehicles operate. Review your COSHH assessments and make sure your coverall specification matches the chemical hazard class.
Chemical Handling
For dedicated chemical handling, the bar goes up. Full coverall protection (Tychem or Proshield depending on the specific chemicals involved), chemical-resistant gloves, face shields, and appropriate footwear should all be standard. Never use Tyvek alone for serious liquid chemical exposure.
