The Buyer's Guide to Chemical Protective Coveralls: What Every Safety Manager Should Know

Not All Coveralls Are Created Equal

Walk into any PPE discussion and coveralls come up immediately. They are the backbone of chemical protective clothing. But with so many options on the market, buying the right ones for your workplace requires a little knowledge. This guide cuts through the noise.

Understand Your Risk Level First

Before you look at any product, you need to know what you are protecting against. Is it dry particulate? Light liquid splashes? Hazardous chemicals? Airborne gases? The answers determine the category of coverall you need. European standards classify protective clothing into types (Type 1 through Type 6, with Type 5 and 6 covering particles and light splashes). Knowing which type your risk assessment calls for is the starting point for any purchasing decision.

Material Matters

The material of the coverall determines its barrier properties. Tyvek's flash-spun polyethylene is excellent for particles and light splashes. Tychem's multi-layer barrier fabric handles far more aggressive chemical exposure. Proshield sits in the middle. MelloBrand covers general-purpose everyday protection. The right choice depends on what workers are actually facing.

Do Not Overlook Fit and Sizing

A coverall that does not fit properly is a coverall that does not protect properly. Gaps at the wrists, ankles, or collar are genuine contamination risks. Make sure you are ordering across a range of sizes to suit your workforce.
