Three Products, Three Purposes
Du-Pont's protective clothing range is genuinely world-class, but the three main product lines are not interchangeable. Each one is engineered for a different level and type of chemical hazard. Understanding the distinction helps safety managers spend money wisely and keeps workers properly protected.
Tyvek: Lightweight and Versatile
Tyvek is Du-Pont's most widely used protective fabric. It is made from high-density polyethylene fibres and offers reliable protection against dry particles, light splashes, and general contamination. It is breathable relative to many chemical fabrics, comfortable enough for extended wear, and cost-effective for high-frequency use. Typical applications include asbestos handling, light construction work, automotive spraying, and general manufacturing.
Tychem: Full Chemical Barrier
Tychem is a completely different proposition. It is engineered for environments where serious chemical exposure is a real risk: industrial chemical plants, pharmaceutical production, decontamination work, and hazardous material response. The Tychem range uses multiple barrier layers that resist a far broader spectrum of chemicals than Tyvek. It is heavier, less breathable, and more expensive but entirely necessary when the stakes are high.
Proshield: The Practical Middle Ground
Proshield offers enhanced liquid repellency over standard Tyvek without stepping up to the full specification of Tychem. It is popular in environments where liquid chemical splashes are a risk but full immersion-level protection is not needed. Many safety managers keep both Tyvek and Proshield on site to match the garment to the task.
