Getting to Know: Alan Mckee, Engineering & Quality Manager
Time with the company: 3½ Years. What time did you get up this morning? About 10mins too late!!! What attracted you to Goudsmit UK? Initially, I was attracted to Goudsmit UK by the challenge of leading an Engineering and Quality team within a business that has the potential for significant growth and to be involved in engineering projects in new fields that I hadn’t yet experienced in my career. Describe your job in 5 words Detailed, varied, accountable, challenging, diverse. What does your job entail? Ensuring that our supply chain, manufacturing processes and technical documentation is of the highest standard, in order to meet our customer demands and in line with our industry certifications. What does a typical day involve for you? I don’t think I have a typical day. Every day is different and we never know what is around the next corner. How did you get into this line of work? I have worked in many fields of engineering in the past, ranging from metrology and inspection, design, manufacturing to lean six sigma so I suppose a role in engineering and quality management was the logical next step. What’s the best part of your job at Goudsmit UK? I enjoy working directly with our varied supplier base in order to drive continual improvement. Since joining the company back in 2015, I have seen dramatic improvements in many areas of our manufacturing processes and my aim is to continue this in the future. What personal qualities are required to do your job? Attention to detail and a consistent and professional approach to every aspect of what I do. What’s the biggest challenges you face in your job? It is sometimes difficult to take enough time to look to the future and try to see the the overall big picture, future trends and developments and set goals accordingly. What’s the most rewarding part of your job? I take pride in what I do and always aim for “right first time”. I enjoy seeing new projects come to fruition and the customer receiving quality components on time, first time. What’s the best piece of advice you could give to a new person joining your team? “The devil is in the detail” – Always make sure you know what is being asked of you and that you fully understand the customer expectations. What do you do in your spare time? I enjoy road cycling, DIY, caravanning and spending time with my two young daughters. Any fun / interesting facts about you? I like to collect rare whisky but it’s hard not to open them!! What time will you get home this evening? Around 5.15pm, depending on the Belfast traffic.
