Gibbons Engineering Group completed a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) installation at Anglian Water’s Conington Fen pumping station, upgrading control of Pumps 1 and 2. The works were carried out to improve operational reliability and enable efficient automated pump control based on site-level conditions.
Scope of Works
The project involved the modification and upgrade of Pump 2 control infrastructure, along with full integration of a new VSD system. Key activities included:
- Isolation of the Pump 2 control panel to allow safe working
- Recording of existing connections before disconnection
- Removal of existing overload equipment
- Re-routing of control cables to suit the new VSD fault relay configuration
- Installation of drive run relay and start relay
- Full panel modifications to accommodate VSD integration
- Re-termination of motor and supply cables to Pump 2 VSD
- Glanding and termination of all associated power and control cabling
- Labelling and identification of newly installed cables
Commissioning & Testing
Following installation and modification works, the system was fully recommissioned:
- VSD programmed and configured on site
- Motor direction confirmed as correct
- Pumps tested in both hand and automatic modes
- Verified run and fault signal feedback
- Full operational testing completed successfully
System Outcome
Upon completion of commissioning, both pumps were left fully operational under automatic control, starting and stopping based on level conditions as designed.
Conclusion
The Conington Fen upgrade successfully delivered a modernised VSD control solution for Pumps 1 and 2, improving system control and operational efficiency for Anglian Water. The installation was completed safely, commissioned successfully, and returned to full automatic operation at handover.
