Gibbons Engineering Group attended the Ardleigh River Intake site on behalf of Anglian Water to safely disconnect and remove a faulty motor and Variable Speed Drive (VSD) assembly from a large pump installation. The project required careful handling and lifting procedures to ensure the equipment could be transported back to the workshop for further investigation and repair.
Scope of Works
Upon arrival on site, our engineers isolated and disconnected the faulty motor from the large pump assembly. The coupling was split and left attached to the motor, ready for transport back to the workshop for inspection.
Using a dedicated lifting frame, the motor was carefully lifted clear of the pump and lowered safely onto a pump-up truck before being transferred onto a lorry for transport.
The mains supply and motor connections were then disconnected from the VSD. Our engineers used a hydraulic trolley to safely remove the drive unit, which was also loaded onto the transport vehicle for return to the works.
As part of the fault-finding process, the CCU card was removed from the VSD. This will allow engineers to power up the unit within the workshop environment and download operational parameters and diagnostic data to assist with investigation and repair planning.
Engineering Challenges
The removal operation involved handling heavy industrial equipment, requiring safe lifting procedures and careful coordination throughout the process. The controlled removal of both the motor and VSD ensured minimal disruption to the site while preparing the equipment for detailed workshop assessment.
Outcome
The faulty motor and VSD were successfully removed from the site and transported safely back to the Gibbons Engineering Group workshop for further analysis and repair work. Further work is required following workshop inspection and diagnostics.
