How to Clean Engraved Metal Plaques and Nameplates
Good maintenance helps engraved plaques and nameplates retain their appearance, but the cleaning method should always suit the particular metal and finish.

Furnells recommends starting gently by removing dust and loose dirt with a soft cloth rather than using aggressive abrasives. Bare brass, lacquered brass, stainless steel and coated aluminium should not automatically be treated in the same way.

Harsh products can alter the surface finish, damage infill or affect surrounding coatings, so unfamiliar cleaners should be tested carefully before wider use.

For commemorative, historic or high-value plaques, professional advice is preferable to experimenting with strong polishing compounds or chemical cleaners.
