How Does Laser Engraving Work?

Laser engraving uses a controlled beam of energy to alter or remove a small amount of material and create a permanent mark from digital artwork.
The process starts with suitable artwork or lettering prepared on a computer so that size, position and linework can be controlled before the item is placed in the machine.
Depending on the material and the required finish, the laser can remove surface material, change its appearance or create contrast. Power, speed, focus and the number of passes all influence the final result.
Raster engraving builds an image line by line and is well suited to filled areas, while vector engraving follows defined lines and paths for outlines, lettering and detailed marking.
