Fuel consumption flowmeters

Diesel engines are generally operated with a circulating fuel supply system. The supply line feeds the fuel from the tank through a fuel filter and a fuel-feeding pump to the high-pressure fuel injection pump on the engine. The supply quantity is always larger than the maximum engine consumption. The excessive fuel flows back through the return line into the tank. The engine consumption corresponds to the supply volume minus return volume. Measuring Fuel consumption in diesel engines represents many problems whether it is in a Marine application, locomotive, or bus application - temperature fluctuations and pulsation can all cause incorrect readings if a correct flow instrument is not used. Flowtechniks EM range of positive displacement flowmeters are a high accuracy flowmeter with a high turn down ratio. As a displacement Flowmeter, temperature has little effect on the readings, but because the oval gears follow every movement of the fluid flow in whatever direction, Pulsation and reverse flow can be catered for and measured if required. Solving Pulsation problems Flowtechniks EM(SB) model is a special build meter which can tackle the problem of pulsation in the low pressure lines caused by the injector pumps - this pulsation can cause Pressure surges, a brief reversal of the flow direction of the fuel - by employing special rotors we can remove the inaccurate readings which can be generated by this problem -giving very precise and accurate readings. By taking data into our RT12 the pulses generated from the supply and return can be brought into the display and a Sum calculation taken of Fuel consumption. There are models in the Flowtechnik range up to 4” dia with pulse output or mechanical display for measuring fuel accurately and precisely. By selecting a Flowtechnik consumption System, Fuel consumption can be monitored in real time, this can show considerable savings in fuel useage by employing a system where a more econimic gear is used for instance or lower revs are used.
