Newly Installed Fixed Steel Fire Escape Ladders Enhance Safety and Access

Fixed Steel Ladders

Fixed steel fire escape ladders can provide a means of escape if there is not physically enough room to install a staircase. However, most regulations (BS5395, Approved Document K etc) do not recommend their use, principally because the very old, and the very young, would find it hard to climb down them. Having said that, the exit route provided by a fixed fire escape ladder is definitely better than not having one at all. Vertical fire escape ladders are principally an access tool for plant rooms and suchlike; companionway ladders are more user-friendly for general staff.

Vertical Ladders

  • Ideal for when a fixed, vertical ladder is required and there is limited room on the ground

  • Can be supplied with safety cage when more than 2.5m in length

  • Provide a permanent means of escape, unlike other types of ladder which are stored inside and have to be erected for use in evacuations

  • Designed for one person to use at a time

  • Long enough ones include a rest platform every 6m

  • Available in steel, aluminum alloy and stainless steel

Companion Way Ladders

  • 65-75 degree slope is easier to climb down than a standard vertical ladder

  • Maximum height of 3m

  • Minimum gap of 250mm between top of steps and the wall

  • A single-line handrail is attached to each side of the ladder

  • Top of the ladder can be protected by a self-closing gate

  • Rungs can be open steel flooring (Lionweld or similar), 20mm round steel bar, or durbar (mild steel ‘checquerplate’ with a raised diamond gripping surface)

Fire Escape Ltd makes and installs both types of fire escape ladder, and will be happy to discuss a customer's requirements with them when contacted.
