Wheat Pesticide Review and Ethical Consumer Choices Survey
If you’ve been following news on the wheat pesticide story, this week the European Food Safety Authority has announced that it will be officially reviewing the risks of the pesticide gyphosphate and will consider new research which suggests that it is ‘probably carcinogenic’. The EFSA is reviewing and risk-assessing the substance which is currently facing pressures from The Soil Association in it’s “Not In Our Bread” campaign, which is pressuring petitioners to ask for it’s prevention of use on wheat. Whatever the outcome, glyphosphate and all related pesticides should be stored in adequate storage tanks. Other news this week highlights how, according to a recent poll by Mintel, more than half of consumers would boycott food manufacturers if they found out they were acting unethically. Three quarters of respondents expressed that meat coming from well cared for animals was a top issue with 52 per cent saying that they’d boycott unethical firms. Another 52 per cent would pay more for ethical brands, with 45 per cent feeling good about buying ethical groceries. 24 per cent stated that where they shopped depended on the range of ethical products. The Mintel report even examined lab-grown meat, and one in six consumers said that meat grown from animal cells in dedicated production facilities was a good solution to feeding the word. Respondents tended to favour meat or dairy from cloned animals and food grow using human waste as fertiliser. And finally, one in three consumers expressed that food products from British farmers and producers should be allowed to carry the Fairtrade mark.
