Fertiliser – From Airborne Dust To Liquid Fertiliser Tanks
Much of the early fertiliser spraying across the country is now complete and spring barley is in the ground, with most coming through and growing fast. For now, farming attention focuses on fencing in preparation for turning out stock and other important activities, but it won’t be long until more fertiliser applications and it’s this on-going and high cost expendable that makes all of the difference to agricultural margins. But according to Farming UK, NASA might just have a solution – Dust! According to America’s space agency, more than 22,000 tonnes of phosphorus is deposited on the Amazon each year as part of nearly 22,000 tonnes of dust blown across the Atlantic Ocean from North Africa. The phosphorus comes from a dried up lake bed in Chad that contains rocks full of phosphorus-rich dead microorganisms. However, this natural phenomena is not really going to benefit UK farmers, even if winds change and bring the Sahara dust over to Britain, as happens from time to time. The levels of phosphorus deposited when this happens are minimal and UK farmers should focus more on opportunities for Nitrogen deposition, something that plays a greater role in crop nutrition and growth. Throughout the 70s and 80s, 70 to 80 kg S/ha of sulphur was deposited on agricultural land, but this is said to have come from industrial pollution. Since industrial outputs have cleaned up somewhat since then, the rate of deposition from the atmosphere is now virtually zero, so farmers really do have to manage their own fertiliser needs themselves. Although liquid fertiliser prices can go from high to astronomical and back to high, farmers are making the most of this commodity by only administering the exact amount required, thanks to improved soil testing facilities. Precision farming is another practice gaining popularity and large volume liquid fertiliser tanks enable farmers to bulk buy and to store pre-mixed liquid fertiliser securely until the point it is needed. Enduramaxx liquid fertiliser tanks are made from high strength uv-stabilised polyethylene and available in sizes up to 25,000 litres.
