The phosphorus comes from a dried up lake bed in Chad that contains rocks full of phosphorus-rich dead microorganisms. However, this natural phenomena is not really going to benefit UK farmers, even if winds change and bring the Sahara dust over to Britain, as happens from time to time. The levels of phosphorus deposited when this happens are minimal and UK farmers should focus more on opportunities for Nitrogen deposition, something that plays a greater role in crop nutrition and growth. Throughout the 70s and 80s, 70 to 80 kg S/ha of sulphur was deposited on agricultural land, but this is said to have come from industrial pollution. Since industrial outputs have cleaned up somewhat since then, the rate of deposition from the atmosphere is now virtually zero, so farmers really do have to manage their own fertiliser needs themselves. Although liquid fertiliser prices can go from high to astronomical and back to high, farmers are making the most of this commodity by only administering the exact amount required, thanks to improved soil testing facilities.
