This week, according to the Western Morning News, Westcountry farmers have reported that they are more confident that sufficient security measures are now in place to protect their fertiliser stocks, hopefully reassuring the public. Counter-terrorism police issued guidelines on the safe storage of chemicals, highlighting that explosives manufactured using fertiliser were involved in 90 per cent of terror attacks in the UK. With the threat of terrorist attacks at a record high, authorities urged the farming communities to be vigilant surrounding suspicious activity. However, National Farmers Union crop chairman, Mike Hambly, reported that the farming community, along with the general public, could rest assured that strict regulations on the safe storage of chemicals, including fertiliser, were already in place. The existing code of practice stipulates that farmers cannot trade chemicals on and that they should regularly check their stocks, said Hambly. In addition, NFU guidelines also suggest that chemicals are kept within secure units and never stored in the site of the public and within close reach of a road.
