PESTICIDE STORAGE TANKS AND HOW ANGLIAN WATER IS REDUCING METALDAHYDE ENTERING WATER SUPPLIES
Slugs are of course a huge problem across farming and metaldahyde is used extensively to combat them each year. Although harmless to humans, the chemical is extremely difficult to remove from water treatment works and meeting the tough EU targets on its control is a challenge. Even the equivalent of one drop in an Olympic-sized swimming pool would go against EU regulations. Anglian Water has introduced a new team of water catchment advisors who are spearheading a project named ‘Slug It Out’ at three Northamptonshire reservoirs. The campaign will help farmers to move away from traditional metaldehyde and use alternative chemicals instead and they will receive payments to cover the cost of taking part in the campaign. Speaking to the Daventry Express, Lucinda Gilfoyle of Anglian Water explained how ‘Slug it out’ is a new way of working for Anglian Water. The company spends large amounts of money removing pesticides from drinking water and this raises customer bills and wastes energy. By adopting this more proactive approach, a more responsible catchment management process will benefit customers, farmers and the environment. Enduramaxx provides vertical and horizontal storage tanks for all agricultural liquids and chemicals and includes storage tanks especially designed for pesticides. Designed using high-grade UV-stabilised polyethylene, Enduramaxx storage tanks keep pesticides and other chemicals safe from leakage and spillage, minimising the risk of harmful chemicals entering water supplies.
