North East Farmer to Lead Pesticide Scheme

A well known North-east farmer has been chosen to spearhead a scheme to ensure that pesticides are used correctly across farms. Andrew Moir, who farms Thornton Mains near Laurencekirk, has been selected to chair the Voluntary Initiative in Scotland which will encourage the responsible use of plant protection products, as well as working in conjunction with politicians and the agri-chemical industry on issues including; legislation, availability of products and also water quality. The scheme was originally launched in 2001 in response to a proposed pesticides tax with rates expected to have peaked at 30 per cent. The VI provides an efficient, voluntary and lighter touch approach for farmers and the agri-chemical industry to demonstrate that they take their responsibilities seriously, according to Moir. He added that; “…we hope to persuade regulators and politicians to recognise the significant strides the industry has made and adopt a more pragmatic approach to key areas for growers, without resorting to the blunt threat of taxation”.
