MANAGING WATER SUPPLIES FOR PIGS – WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT AND CONE BOTTOM TANKS
The Shropshire Star focuses its attention to pig farming this week and highlights how the careful management of water supplies, including wastewater, is essential to the operation of a successful pig unit. According to Nigel Penlington of AHDB Pork, due to the high cost of disposing of wastewater, its management and subsequent reduction should be considered throughout the pig rearing process. Wastewater can also end up diluting slurry resulting in farmers covering the costs of additional storage and then spreading. There is also the added consideration of reduced nutrient value that will have knock-on effects in the production process. Wastewater can be kept to a minimum by ensuring the right drinkers are fitted at the right height and that their flow rates remain correct. Wastewater can be processed using cone bottom tanks that serve as separation tanks, or sludge tanks. Enduramaxx conical tanks allow sediments to sink to the bottom of their cone design from where it can be then be drained away. Offered in a number of varying degree cones and in sizes ranging from 250 to 17,000 litres, cone bottom tanks are available with self-supporting roofs, or in an open top design. All Enduramaxx conical tanks are made from a single piece of rotationally-moulded, UV-stabilised polyethylene, so wastewater is processed and stored safely and securely, reducing the risk of leakage into slurry supplies and into other water sources.
