FARMERS FACING CROP CRISIS – EXCESSIVE RAINFALL CAN BRING BENEFITS THOUGH
A number of farmers across Hampshire reported to the Daily Echo that torrential rain throughout August has hit their profits hard. Throughout the last week of the month, 19.4mm of rain fell on the Sunday, 11.6mm on Monday and 15.2mm fell last Tuesday, resulting in what some describe as a major crop crisis. According to some farmers, it has been around 10 years since the region experienced a similar situation and if rainfall continues at this level, farms will not be able to get their early crops harvested. Cereal crops are being left rotting in fields after one of the wettest August’s in 15 years and at least two days of sunshine are needed before machines can process these crops. On top of that, once they have been gathered, they need to be dried of course. Whilst the wet weather might be hitting cereal profits by as much as 20 per cent, many farms are taking advantage of the excessive rainfall through increasingly popular rainwater harvesting techniques. Enduramaxx rainwater tanks collect roof run-off and store rainwater safely and indefinitely until it is required. Enduramaxx rainwater tanks are vertical storage tanks made from a single piece of rotationally moulded, ribbed, UV-stabilised polyethylene.
