Cumbria Farmers Facing Floods For the Third Time
Farming communities across Cumbria faced flooding for the third time in less than a month, following torrential rains and high winds in the wake of Storm Desmond. The Environment Agency has issued no less than 23 flood warnings across England and Wales and 14 in the North West, urging people to take immediate action. According to the BBC, the MET office has already issued yellow warnings for rain throughout the region for Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Some 600 farmers already badly affected by the floods would have had emergency payments fast tracked. The farmers who were told they might not get their Basic Payment Scheme claims until February have been told by Farming Minister, George Eustice, that money for farmers was a priority. With the floods inhibiting scores of farmers from actively farming their land, farmers can at least ensure that they are stocking up on free rainfall. Enduramaxx rainwater harvesting tanks capture large volumes of roof run-off and put farmers in a position to save money over mains water supplies and increased license fees for water extraction. Live flood warnings are available from the Environment Agency and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency Websites and the public and farming communities alike are urged to refer to these valuable resources.
