Waste and Recycling Fires

Do you know that there are approximately 700 fires every year in waste-processing centres that are caused by batteries being thrown in household rubbish bins?

If that is what the small batteries do, can you imagine what the larger, more commercial batteries do?

According to The Environmental Services Association, resulting fires, cost the fire services and waste operators some £158m a year, as well as being a threat to life, causing disruption to the local area and environmental impacts.

Whilst we are unable to stop fires from starting at Elite Precast Concrete, we can help with prevention and protection and the containment of fires, when they happen, with our Legato interlocking blocks that are used in building fire walls and storage bays within the waste operating site.

Recognised within the FPP (Fire Prevention Plan) for waste and recycling bay guidelines, using our Legato concrete blocks minimises the spread of fire within the site and to neighbouring sites.

Building fire walls and bays can reduce the separation distances required in the FPP, as long as they are fire resist (both radiative heat and flaming) and have a fire resistance period of at least 120 minutes to allow waste to be isolated and extinguished within 4 hours.
