Vulcathene Makes the Grade at Plantsbrook School
A £20m rebuild of a Midlands secondary school has utilised our Vulcathene chemical drainage pipework system, as it looks to provide state-of-the-art science laboratories. Part of a major £190m Private Finance Initiative (PFI) to fund upgrades to eight Midlands schools, the construction of the new 11,700 square metre Plantsbrook School has seen a new three story teaching block built to house bespoke classrooms and studios to house subjects including science, computing, dance and design. The 12 new science laboratories are all located on the 2nd floor and mechanical and electrical contractor, Dodd Group, was tasked with sourcing a reliable chemical drainage pipework system to service the laboratories. Due to previous positive experiences with the system, Dodd Group turned to our Vulcathene chemical drainage system. Installed to convey chemical waste from the sinks in the science laboratories, through to the school’s foul waste drainage system, Vulcathene Mechanical was installed for all of the low level stacks, where fused joints were not required, with Vulcathene Enfusion utilised for all risers and high level stacks. With this element of the pipework to be boxed in, making access to the pipework difficult following completion of the project, it was crucial a secure joint was made that could stand the test of time. The timescale was crucial for this project, as the fit out needed to be completed for the start of the new school term so delays were simply not an option. The lightweight nature of Vulcathene, which enables ease of handling on site, combined with the quick and simple installation process, helped reduce installation time on site. Commenting on the project, Stuart Rencher from Dodd Group, said: “Due to the large quantities of chemicals being used in the laboratories, and with such high concentrations, we needed to be confident we were installing a safe solution. We have used Vulcathene on previous projects and, with a proven track record for laboratory drainage within education environments, it was the ideal solution.” Experiments in science laboratories often lead to unknown combinations of chemicals being created, therefore it is imperative that the drainage system can safely transport any chemical concoctions. Vulcathene offers educational establishments the reassurance that it has a proven pedigree over many decades in dealing with all manner of chemical waste cocktails from laboratories across the world. Available in sizes from 38mm – 152mm, Vulcathene is a purpose designed chemical drainage system available in two easy jointing methods; Mechanical for demountable joints and Enfusion for welded joints, offering complete flexibility for designers and installers of chemical waste systems.
