Innovative Hydraulic Design Process - Phase 1 Complete
It has been an eventful 10 months, but The Cylinder Service Centre is now pleased to announce the end to the formal hydraulic Design and Process Innovation (DPI) exercise we started back in July 2013. The original idea behind this DPI exercise was to streamline our hydraulic cylinder design work to make it much quicker to formulate customer solutions so that accurate pricing could be supplied sooner. For repairs, or breakdown replacements in particular, it is vitally important that customers are not delayed in making a decision when time is so critically important.By the end of 2013 we had formulated the Orthogenetic Cylinder and Hydraulic Rapid Engineering process, or OCHRE. OCHRE System Othogenetic means a structured evolutionary process rather than a random one. In terms of the process this means that, although each design is unique, it is built from elements, or building blocks that we have established will compile to an efficient and effective design. As time goes by, and more and more designs go through the process, the end result improves as performance information from the design outputs is fed back into the system. We therefore have a mechanism that not only improves the service we provide to our customers, but also provides a structured form of continuous improvement for the business overall. The development of OCHRE is now complete as a design framework, but the components continue to be improved. This whole exercise has been so successful, that we have been able to add new personnel specifically dedicated to developing the concept further and taking the ideas more directly into production - effectively phase 2 of the development overall. Managing Director Gary Davison said: "When we started the Design and Process Innovation exercise we intended to improve the efficiency of our design process and reduce lead times, but the end result has far exceeded our initial expectations." The next phase of development is now well under way and is focused on the way in which design interfaces with production. There is still some way to go, but we are already seeing substantial efficiency improvements even in these early stages.
