Southbridge– Cable Stay Details Client: Jackson Civil Engineering Location: Northampton Length: 58m Width 3m Form: Cable Stay Project Description This striking bridge forms a bold statement against the skyline. The lightweight cable-stayed steel bridge superstructure formed a link central to a new housing development and was designed, manufactured and installed by CTS. Cable stay structures are generally used for spans over 50m in length and this can be achieved with one cable tower or two. Tensioned Macalloy bars affix to the mast and support the bridge deck at regular points along the walkway resulting in a lightweight structural solution. Installation and access issues become critical design parameters with this type of structure – buildability is key. Because of the low structural stiffness of the deck itself both the natural frequency and the installation methodology was crucial to the design. CTS's own experienced bridge installation team installed the bridge cable tower first, then once the superstructure was erected, attached the tensioned cables.
