Balustrades For Period Style
Relaxing on the patio with friends and family (or just a book) is what summer is all about. But so many patios are overlooked and undervalued. Finishing your space with balustrading can transform it, creating an elegant, period inspired feature in your garden. Read on for more inspiration.
Edwardian Style
Our Hever Balustrade is the epitome of Edwardian chic, to finish your patio beautifully. Handcrafted in fine cast stone, this classical design can make a feature of your landscape, bringing terraced levels into a cohesive design. Pair it with our steps and some lighting for a charming space to enjoy and entertain in all year round.
But why is it called Hever balustrade if it’s Edwardian? Yes, Hever Castle is synonymous with Tudor Queen, Anne Bolyn, the second wife of Henry VIII, but that’s not where it’s history ends. Let’s go back to 1903. After inheriting a $100 million fortune, making him the richest man in America, William Waldorf Aster, bought Hever Castle. He commissioned the current landscaped gardens and lake, and the iconic Golden Staircase was created as a central feature. Fast forward to October 1987, when the UK was struck by a cyclone and this glorious garden staircase was badly damaged by fallen trees. Chilstone was asked to restore it to its former glory. And our seamless handiwork still stands at Hever Castle today.

This sophisticated balustrading combines grace and grandeur. It is so versatile it blends with most heritage landscape designs, creating an eye-catching space, you’ll love for years to come. It may have originated from a historical palace, but it can be styled your way to make it a key focal point in your garden.

Waterloo Regency
This balustrade is a classic. With traditional, curvaceous balusters, it adds eminence and polish to steps, patios and walkways.
Ourbalustrade seems so recognisable and that’s with good reason. If you have been to London, you will have seen its sister design along the Embankment which is no coincidence.

The current Waterloo bridge that spans the Thames in London today, was finished in 1945, made from reinforced concrete with a Portland stone finish. But its predecessor was created in 1811 and opened in 1817 on the anniversary of the battle of Waterloo. This was just as George III was deemed unable to rule and his son, who later became George IV, was installed at his regent, creating a new Regency era. This bridge was a magnificent design, with grand doric columns and lined with balustrading, matching much of the existing balustrade that runs along the Embankment today.
When this bridge was decommissioned, the main components were kept and stored until after the Second World War. Then the balusters along with the fine doric columns and other components were auctioned. One such baluster was picked up by Chilstone and it’s been a significant element of our range ever since

So, when you choose our balustrade for your garden you are recreating a little piece of Regency history. Because our fine cast stone is created by hand, our team know how to configure the components to their best use to be cost effective. This allows us the flexibility to create a wide range of options, including curved balustrade.
