Rules tightened for the carriage of lithium batteries on aircraft
Stricter regulations regarding the transport of lithium batteries on aircraft, which come into effect on 1 April this year, have been agreed by the International Civil Aviation Organization Over a period of time there have been increasing restrictions due to the inherent risk in transporting this product. Fires in consignments of lithium batteries have been implicated in the loss of three aircraft over the last 10 years, and some parties, including airline pilots, are pressing for a total ban. It is estimated that 5.5 billion lithium batteries were produced in 2013 – 86% were lithium ion with the remainder being the lithium metal type.
