New technology to identify illicit lithium batteries

Lithium batteries shipped by themselves are to be banned from passenger aircraft from the start of the new year. However, the biggest threat comes from undeclared goods. But now new technology may be able to detect lithium batteries during x-ray. Lithium metal batteries have been subject to particular scrutiny and their transport, when shipped by themselves, will be banned from passenger aircraft on 1 January 2015. This prohibition does not apply to batteries packed with, or contained in, equipment… Perhaps the biggest issue facing the transport sector is that of misdeclared or undeclared goods, which the varying intelligence led and physical screening techniques have failed to detect. The use of x-ray equipment, which is widely used as part of aviation screening processes to detect undeclared lithium batteries in cargo, is a logical step.
