Shipping Containers for Outdoor Activity Centres

Shipping containers are being used in more and more areas, including now, outdoor activity centres. Shipping containers work well for these centres as they can be situated wherever additional space is needed. There’s many ways in which a shipping container can be used by an outdoor activity centre, such as additional activity space, welfare units or even just plain old storage!

These centres can often span quite a large space and they don’t have buildings in all areas. A shipping container can be sited with minimal effort if access is suitable and can also be uplifted and moved between sites if other areas are in need of the unit.

Activity Spaces

With centres introducing more activities to their sites, they may need extra space to provide these new activities or they may want to upgrade the activity spaces they already have. Some sites have even built new spaces for indoor activities too.

We have now created two shelters which were used for laser shooting, although these could be used for archery or other types of shooting. These shelters were introduced to give a space where the guests could be protected from the weather and still continue to use the facilities.

These shelters were made from 40′ HC used shipping containers. As they were away from the main space, the site was not as concerned by the looks of the unit. A used container works well in this case as it will have a lot of cosmetic damage.

We removed one of the 40ft sides, and welded up the cargo doors. (this is good for sites that might have a lot of children who might mess around with doors!) We also repainted the unit in green so it didn’t stick out so much when sat in the field.

In one of the units, we also fitted a row of timber benches along the back wall for those to wait comfortably for their turn. We also left a small space beneath the bench so bags and personal belongings could be stored out of the way.

Welfare Spaces

It’s a great way to offer extra facilities in the areas that may be a bit too far from the main buildings.

In 2024 we supplied a custom built drying room to an activity centre in Grantham. This drying room can be used to accelerate the drying of equipment and clothing for both guests and staff. Being outdoors there’s lots of ways to get wet! – Unpredictable UK weather, water activities to name a few.

There’s also the option to expand toilet / shower facilities or even provide snack bars or catering spaces.

Equipment Kiosks

Shipping containers can also be used as equipment kiosks on these sorts of sites. They can store equipment, like mini golf clubs or safety gear. We can fit a serving hatch into the side of a container. These can be opened up so items can be handed over between guests and staff with ease.

They can also be used as drop off zones. We have previously supplied a unit that we cut holes in the side. This allowed their staff to drop PPE through without needing anyone to staff it. This approach could also be used for dropping off borrowed equipment.

Storage

Now one of the most obvious uses – storage! This is what most of the containers we sell are used for. On an activity site, there’s many things that may need to be stored – maintenance equipment, seasonal items, safety equipment and many more.

Shipping containers are secure units so you can be assured the contents is safe. To keep the contents safe from condensation, you can also add in various methods to collect moisture or prevent build up. Racking is another great way to get the most out of your storage space.

Charging Station

You can also convert a storage to container to both store and charge your equipment. We have previously provided a small charging station storage container to an activity centre.

This unit was modified to include electrics, with lots of plug sockets and hooks. This allowed the site to easily store and charge their laser tag guns and vests. It was done in a 6ft container, so a very small space, but the customer really made the space work for them.
