A Guide to Selecting the Right Coating

Whether punching, piercing, blanking, or forming it pays to have quality punches. But even the best tool steel has limits, and this is where surface treatments step in. In the demanding world of precision engineering, the right punch coating will dramatically increase productivity and maximise tool longevity. It's important to consider that the best coating isn’t always just the hardest option. To achieve optimal results it is essential to match the coating chemistry to your material and usage. At Berger Tools, we can offer a range of coatings when ordering your punches. Here is a handy guide to help you decide the ideal choice for your application!

 

TiN (Titanium Nitride)

 

The "gold standard" (literally, given its colour) of coatings. TiN is the most common coating for a reason: it’s versatile and cost-effective.

 

Best for: General-purpose machining and punching of mild steels, hard or abrasive materials where increased wear resistance is the primary goal.

Key Benefit: Greatly reduces friction and provides a significant hardness boost over uncoated steel.

Limit: It begins to oxidize at around 600°C, so it’s not the best fit for high-heat applications.

TiCN (Titanium Carbo-Nitride)

 

TiCN adds carbon to the mix, resulting in a coating with a higher hardness level and excellent abrasion resistance.

 

Best for: High-strength steels, stainless steel, cast iron, and abrasive materials.

Key Benefit: Excellent wear resistance in applications where mechanical stress is high.

Limit: Like TiN, it has a moderate temperature ceiling.

TiAlN (Titanium Aluminum Nitride)

 

When the temperature rises, TiAlN shines. Under high temperatures, this coating forms a protective aluminium oxide layer on the surface, which actually helps it resist heat better as the job gets tougher.

 

Best for: Hot forging and high-speed operations and stainless steel.

Key Benefit: Superior thermal stability (up to 800°C). It’s perfect for dry machining or environments with minimal lubrication, or where the tool temperature rises substantially.

CrN (Chromium Nitride)

 

If you struggle with "material pickup" or galling, where the work material sticks to the punch — CrN is your solution.

 

Best for: Copper, brass, and aluminium.

Key Benefit: It’s more "slippery" than Titanium-based coatings and offers excellent adhesion to the substrate. Excellent for forming tools.

AlCrN (Aluminum Chromium Nitride)

 

AlCrN is an evolution of CrN, designed for the most demanding environments. It combines extreme hardness with the highest temperature resistance on this list.

 

Best for: Heavy-duty stamping and high-stress forging.

Key Benefit: Can withstand temperatures up to 1,100°C, making it nearly invincible in high-speed, high-friction setups.

DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon)

 

DLC is a unique coating that provides high hardness with an incredibly low coefficient of friction. A high-performance choice for dry cutting or forming challenging non-ferrous alloys.

 

Best for: Non-ferrous metals (e.g. aluminium, copper, titanium) and plastics.

Key Benefit: Often used when lubrication isn’t possible or desired. It prevents "built-up edge" on the tool.

Limit: It is sensitive to high heat and is generally not used for punching heavy steels.

Which Is Best For Your Application?

If you are seeing rapid wear and abrasion (material removal): Focus on maximizing hardness with TiCN or TiN.

If you are seeing material build-up and cold welding (galling/sticking): Prioritise low friction and high release with CrN or DLC.

If your tool is getting extremely hot (thermal wear): Choose the high thermal stability of TiAlN or AlCrN.
