Our Top 10 Hybrid Cars
When announced in the summer of 2017 that no more new purely petrol or diesel cars will be sold after 2040, the motoring world began to focus on the fact that the days of fossils fuel motors are numbered. With electricity playing an ever-evolving role in cars – pure EVs or hybrids – there’s more choice than ever before. However some options are more sensible, usable, affordable and practical than others so we will be sharing with you our top 10 hybrids on the market right now. 10. Toyota Yaris Hybrid Toyota is a bit of an old hand when it comes to hybrids, and the Yaris Hybrid is slightly easier on the pocket than its Prius big brother. It is highly efficient, well equipped and compact yet very roomy inside. The only downside is the ride can be a little frenetic. Toyota Yaris Hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV 9. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV This large SUV hybrid sells more in the UK than it does in its native Japan. Helped by the Government’s electric car subsidy (a grant to have a plug installed) it costs the same as the diesel version. 8. Mercedes-Benz C-Class C300 h With CO2 emissions of only 94g/km, the C-Class C300h would make a smart company car. Still with its classic Mercedes prestige cabin and agile handling , this C-Class also boasts fantastically low running costs. Mercedes-Benz C-Class C300 h BMW i8 7. BMW i8 Masses of sophisticated fun complement this hybrid’s futuristic styling while its hi-tech running gear allows for high speed and low emissions. Of all the cars in our top 10 list, this would be the most likely to give the Porsche 911 the closest run for its money. 6. Volvo XC90 T8 With a fantastic 27-mile electric-only range, only 49g/km of CO2 emissions paired with a 2.0-litre turbo and supercharged petrol engine, the T8 is even more appealing than Volvo’s other premium XC90 models. It is also available with seven seats but is far from cheap unless of course your company is subsidising it. Volvo XC90 T8 Volkswagen Golf GTE 5. Volkswagen Golf GTE Almost on par with the petrol-powered GTI in terms of speed and agility, the GTE boasts smooth handling as well as the usual hybrid car attributes. It has an all-electric range of around 30 miles and emits just 39g/km of CO2 emissions. 4. BMW i3 The i3 isn’t quite as innovative and cutting edge as the previously mentioned i8, but we rate it even higher in our chart. With a very low centre of gravity thanks to its carbon fibre and aluminium chassis plus a low-slung battery pack. The full-EV has an amazing 124-mile range, while the range-extender version of the i3 employs a two-cylinder petrol engine to act as an on board charger for the batteries. BMW i3 Toyota Prius 3. Toyota Prius Whenever the word Hybrid is mentioned, this model pops straight in to your head. And several decades in to the Prius line the latest model finally handles well and gives the driver a small level of thrill. The world’s best-selling hybrid is using even less fuel and emits fewer emissions than ever before. 2. Audi A3 e-tron The A3 is one of our favourite family hatchbacks and now the range has been further enhanced with the addition of a hybrid model. This hybrids ride is even better than its VW Golf GTE, and has an even better interior as well. A great company car but can be costly for a private buyer. Audi A3 e-tron Volkswagen Passat GTE 1. Volkswagen Passat GTE Number 1. This low fuel usage practical estate car can do 31 miles on a charge but achieves 500 miles from just one tank of fuel. The spacious cabin and well equipped interior is very well finished. Paired with a huge load area the Passat GTE It’s our star.
