What should you consider when installing an air compressor?

What should you consider when installing an air compressor?

Location, location, location – When installing an air compressor, there are a few important considerations to ensure optimal performance, safety, and longevity:

  1. Well-Ventilated Area: The compressor generates heat during operation, nominally 85% of the motor power is discharged in hot air so it should be placed in a location with good airflow for cooling air in and discharging the hot air away to help prevent overheating.
  2. Clean Environment: As the air compressor is sucking in condiserable amount of air to compress and for the aftercooler to cool the oil and air, it is essential that the environment aroudn the compressor is as clean as possible.  Dust can damage many components inside the compressor and can cause clogging of the aftercooler which will then cause overheating.  Manufacturer’s warranties will not cover damage due to dust ingress so it is worthwhile invetsing a little but more to install your air compressor in the right location.
  3. Flat Surface: Place the compressor on a level, stable surface to ensure proper operation.
  4. Away from Combustibles: Keep the compressor away from flammable materials, as air compressors generate heat and could present a fire risk if placed near such items.
  5. Sufficient Clearance: Make sure there’s enough space around the compressor for easy maintenance, airflow, and to prevent overheating. Check the manufacturer’s guidelines for the recommended clearance distance.
  6. Noise Considerations: the latest rotary screw air compressors are much quieter than piston compressors but if noise is a concern, consider placing it away from working areas.

If the above considerations are met when installing an air compressor, you will have a happy and reliable air compressor for the long term.  In turn, it will reduce servicing and breakdown costs.  Our team are on hand to assist you with any questions you have or we can arrange a site visit to help you find the best location for your new air compressor.
