Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) Installation
This home in Sevenoaks has had an incredible multi-use games area (MUGA) installed within this beautiful garden. Previously unwanted and tricky to maintain this sloping area of the back lawn struggled to grow real grass and was hard to keep on top of. This combined with the kids wanting to somewhere to practise and play various sports meant this client giving Artificial Lawn Company a call.
Upon our site survey and the brief from the client they wanted to space to incorporate various sports including Hockey, football, pickle ball, basketball and more!
Hockey meant that the grass itself needed to be a shorter pile to ensure a good roll across the pitch. We also recommended our 20mm Lawnflex underlay for extra shock absorbance and cushioning under the grass. This also helped with the pickle ball, alongside a slightly springier foam ball made for a decent enough bounce for a good game.
Transforming a Sloped Garden into a Multi-Use Games Area
For the surrounds of the pitch we went with a 3m high rebound sports mesh at both end and the first panels return along each side. This provides a durable and practical fence, preventing the ball from easily leaving the pitch. On the sides is a 1.2m spectator rail. This not only looks great but it is safe at a lower height as its not sharp so when you’re busy playing you don’t have to worry about catching your arm on the fence.
The goals themselves are aluminium and off the shelf. Once in situ we created a bespoke crossbar and fenced around them for again a durable and efficient system. The customer then fitted his own basketball hoops onto our fencing to add even more usability to the space.
To achieve this transformation, involved moving over 200 tons of hard, chalky soil around the garden to create a flat area for the pitch. This was a challenging project with tricky access, a long sloping garden with tight side access. We could only get a 1ton machine onto the area and the ground is hard chalk. This combined with no room for a dumper /track barrow meant a lot of wheelbarrows back and forth. We also had to rely on our own vehicles to transport all of the subbase and materials to the site as no HGV access onto the driveway.
The grass was then finished with two white lined boxes. These are multi-purpose, perfectly spaced for the back of the pickle ball court when the popup net is in place. The customer has already purchased his own line spraying machine and added blue lines for a perfect pickleball court.
