SiPM vs PMT: which is better for my instrument design?
The better choice depends on the job, but many modern instrument designs now favour SiPMs where compact size, low operating voltage, fast timing and solid-state reliability are priorities. AP Technologies notes that Broadcom SiPMs are increasingly replacing conventional PMTs, APDs and photodiodes in high-speed and low-light applications because they offer very high gain and good signal-to-noise performance in a small package. PMTs can still suit some legacy or specialist systems, but SiPMs are often easier to integrate into newer, smaller platforms. AP Technologies backs this up with support content covering biasing, noise, timing and temperature effects, which is useful when you are comparing the real engineering trade-offs rather than just the headline specification.
