Early in 2021, the multi-disciplined engineering service provider Wilton Engineering approached the Ancorite team to undertake work as part of the site refurbishment at the Mitsubishi Cassel Works in Teesside. Ancorite was required to carry out the installation of a free issue high-quality refractory lining system for a new prefabricated Mitsubishi Regen furnace.
These works were to be carried out off-site at the Wilton Engineering facilities, approximately three miles from the Mitsubishi Cassel Works.
The steel shell of the vessel was presented in three sections; two large cylindrical sections with domed ends and a large outlet duct that ran at 90 degrees to the main furnace chamber. Dimensions were approximately 30m in length by 6m in diameter, and the 3 sections would need to be assembled with precision after transport to the end site.
For this project, Ancorite installed a Steuler refractory brickwork design incorporating several different grades of material and bespoke shapes to complete the installation.
In order to ensure maximum efficiency operating in extreme conditions and temperatures, the lining profile was designed based on exact modelling to determine flow and lining profiles.
The lining construct involved the preparation of the steel shell and the installation of an acid dew point protection barrier.
Following on from this, a premium IFB lining was installed followed by a high quality, high Alumina hot face lining to withstand the high temperatures and extreme conditions.
Work on the new furnace unit required detailed site management involving Wilton Engineering, Mitsubishi and Worley to co-ordinate off-site programming and on-site delivery requirements.
The works undertaken at the excellent Wilton Engineering facility were carried out to the highest standards, incorporating detailed confined space working practice and involved the use of specialist plant and equipment and specific climatic control equipment.
Meticulous site management coupled with detailed project management and the excellent relationships between all parties were imperative to the undisputed success of this project.
