Find The Needle Add My Company
The UK Guide to Not Accidentally Breaking the Law: A Health & Safety Odyssey

Let’s be honest: most people don’t start a business because they’re passionate about fire extinguisher placement or the perfect ergonomic angle of a swivel chair. You start a company to build things, sell things, or change how things are done.

But here’s the reality: the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) won’t be impressed by “disruptive energy” if your office is a tangle of daisy-chained extension leads and good intentions. Whether you’re a solo founder or a growing team, health and safety training is the unglamorous part that stops the exciting part ending in an incident, a claim or an enforcement notice. Here’s what that looks like at different stages.

Fresh starters (under 1 year): “Have you got a competent person?”

Congratulations — your business is less than a year old. You’ve navigated registration, probably built a brand, and likely consumed an heroic amount of caffeine.

At this stage, health and safety can feel like something only big companies worry about. You might think, “It’s just a few of us in a co-working space — what’s the worst that could happen?” The law, however, is clear: you need a competent person to help you meet your health and safety duties.

In many start-ups, that’s the founder or a nominated team member. But “competent” doesn’t mean “whoever has a spare five minutes”. It means someone with the knowledge and ability to recognise risks and manage them properly. Training a responsible person early isn’t just box-ticking — it reduces the chance that a simple, avoidable incident becomes a costly problem.

The scaling squad (5–20 employees): “Is your policy and risk assessment written down?”

Once you hit five employees, the game changes. In the UK, businesses with five or more employees are expected to have their health and safety policy and risk assessments in writing. Verbal agreements and “common sense” rules won’t be enough if something goes wrong.

At this stage, relying on someone having a rough idea of procedures or where the fire assembly point is can leave you exposed. You need someone who understands the hazards relevant to your workplace and can put sensible controls in place. This is where training shifts from “we should probably do that” to an essential safeguard against fines, claims and insurance headaches.

The bigger picture: who are IOSH and NEBOSH?

In the UK, two names carry real weight in health and safety: IOSH and NEBOSH. They’re not sci-fi characters — they’re widely recognised qualifications that employers and regulators take seriously.

IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health)
IOSH courses are practical and designed for managers and supervisors who need to manage safety responsibly without becoming full-time safety specialists. They help people spot hazards, understand responsibilities and take action before problems escalate.

NEBOSH (National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health)
NEBOSH qualifications are more in-depth and are often used by those pursuing a career in health and safety, or by leaders in higher-risk sectors who need a strong understanding of legislation and safety management. Having NEBOSH-qualified capability in a business demonstrates a serious commitment to compliance and risk control.

Why online training makes sense

In 2026, taking a team out of the business for an all-day classroom session isn’t always realistic. Online learning offers a flexible alternative, allowing people to train around work commitments and progress at a pace that suits them.

For growing businesses, online IOSH or NEBOSH training can be a cost-effective way to build competence, strengthen compliance and reduce risk — without putting day-to-day operations on hold. It’s less time spent worrying about paperwork and more time focused on building the business.
